# 08 · Forgotten free trial that converted to a paid plan

**Use when:** a "free trial" silently turned into a paid subscription, and you only noticed it on your statement.

**Do these in order:**
1. **Cancel now** (template 01) so it can't charge again.
2. **Ask for a refund** with the message below. Recent conversions + zero usage = good odds.
3. If they refuse and you never clearly agreed to be charged, or weren't told when the trial would end: **dispute** with your card (template 06).

## The message

**Subject:** Refund request · free trial converted on [DATE] · [ACCOUNT]

Hello,

I signed up for a free trial of [SERVICE] on [DATE]. It converted into a paid plan on [DATE] and I was charged [AMOUNT] [and again on DATE]. I didn't intend to continue, and I haven't used the service since the trial ended.

I've cancelled today. Please refund [AMOUNT / TOTAL] to my card ending in [LAST 4] and confirm by email.

[US, CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: since July 1, 2025, California's Automatic Renewal Law also covers free-to-paid conversions and requires clear disclosure and easy cancellation.]
[UK/EU: I'm within 14 days of the first paid charge / of signing up, and I'm exercising my right to cancel.]

Thank you,
[NAME]

## How to stop this happening again
- When you start any trial, **set a reminder 2 days before it ends**, titled "Cancel [SERVICE] trial or pay [PRICE]".
- Many services let you cancel immediately and still keep the trial until its end date. Cancel on day 1.
- Use a virtual or single-use card number for trials, if your bank offers it.
