Subject: Cancellation request and request to stop recurring charges · [ACCOUNT]
Hello,
I signed up for [SERVICE] online in a few clicks on [APPROX. SIGN-UP DATE]. I have tried to cancel the same way and could not: [DESCRIBE: "the cancel button sends me to a phone number" / "the chat closes" / "the page asks me to call during business hours"].
Please cancel my subscription on account [ACCOUNT] today and stop all recurring charges to my card ending in [LAST 4].
Under the federal Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, sellers of online subscriptions must give consumers a simple way to stop recurring charges. [IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA: California's Automatic Renewal Law, as amended from July 1, 2025, also requires that I can cancel online in the same way I signed up.]
Please confirm the cancellation in writing within 3 business days. If I am charged again after today, I will dispute the charge with my card issuer and file a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and with my state attorney general.

Note: the FTC's 2024 "Click-to-Cancel" rule was vacated by a federal appeals court in July 2025, so do not cite it. ROSCA (the federal law above) and state automatic-renewal laws still apply. Check your state's rules.

Hello,
This email is my notice to cancel my [SERVICE] subscription (account [ACCOUNT]) with effect from [TODAY'S DATE / END OF THE CURRENT BILLING PERIOD]. Please stop all further payments, confirm the cancellation in writing, and confirm the date of the last payment.
[IF YOU SIGNED UP ONLINE IN THE LAST 14 DAYS: I am also exercising my right to cancel within the 14-day cooling-off period, and I request a refund of [AMOUNT], less any deduction you are allowed to make for service already used.]

In Italy, use template 20 (Italian-language "disdetta / recesso").
Use when: the company only cancels by phone (gyms, cable, some newspapers, insurance add-ons). Time: 10–25 minutes. Before you call: have the account number, the last 4 digits of the card, and a pen.
You: Hi, I'd like to cancel my [SERVICE] account today. The account is under [NAME], account number [NUMBER].
Them: Can I ask why you're leaving?
You: I've decided to cancel. Please process the cancellation.
Them: [Offer: discount, free months, downgrade, pause]
You: Thanks, but no. Please cancel the account today. (If the offer is genuinely good and you'd keep it, see template 03 first.)
Them: [Second offer / "Are you sure?" / transfer to "retention"]
You: I'm sure. This is the second time I'm asking. Please cancel the account now and give me a confirmation number.
Them: OK, it's done.
You: Thank you. Can I get:
Send yourself this note and keep it with the account:
Called [COMPANY] on [DATE] at [TIME], number dialled [PHONE]. Spoke to [AGENT NAME]. Cancelled account [NUMBER]. Confirmation #[REF]. Final charge: [DATE/AMOUNT]. Equipment: [RETURN DETAILS].
If you are charged again, use template 06 and attach this note.
The idea: most subscription businesses have a "save" offer that shows up only when you try to leave. You can use that moment on purpose. Decide BEFORE you call or click which of two outcomes you want:
You: I've been a customer since [YEAR]. I'm paying [CURRENT PRICE], new customers get [NEW PRICE], and [COMPETITOR] offers [X] for [PRICE]. I'm planning to cancel today unless there's something you can do on the price.
Them: I can offer [OFFER].
You (if it's below your target): That works. Please confirm: the new monthly price, how long it lasts, what it goes back to afterwards, and that there's no new contract or early-termination fee.
You (if it's not enough): Thanks. Is that the best available? [PAUSE. Say nothing for 5 seconds.]
You (still not enough): OK, then please go ahead and cancel. (A second, better offer often appears here. If not, you cancel: that was the deal you made with yourself.)
Why gyms get their own template: many still require cancellation in person, by certified letter, or with 30 days' notice. Read your contract (or ask the front desk for a copy) and look for: notice period, cancellation method, annual fee date, and any freeze option.
Before cancelling, ask yourself: did I go at least 4 times last month? If not, the per-visit price is probably higher than a drop-in class. Cancel, or freeze if you'll really be back within a set date.

Use when: a bill went up, a promo ended, or you've never asked. Works for internet, mobile, cable/satellite TV, home phone, and often alarm/security monitoring. Time: 15–30 minutes. Best time to call: weekday mornings. Ask for "cancellations" or "retention" directly. That team usually has the most room on price.
Fill this in before you dial:
| Current monthly bill (all-in, with taxes/fees) | [AMOUNT] |
| What it was 12 months ago | [AMOUNT] |
| Plan / speed / data you actually use | [e.g. 300 Mbps, 10 GB data] |
| New-customer price for the same plan (their website) | [AMOUNT] |
| Competitor offer at your address (name, price, speed) | [COMPETITOR, PRICE] |
| Contract end date / early termination fee | [DATE / FEE] |
| Equipment rental you pay for | [MODEM/ROUTER/BOX, AMOUNT] |
| Target price | [AMOUNT] |
| Walk-away price (above this you switch) | [AMOUNT] |
A real competitor offer at your address is the strongest card. Get one from the competitor's website before calling.
You: Hi, I'm calling about my account, number [ACCOUNT]. My bill has gone from [OLD] to [NEW] and I'd like to cancel or find a better price. Can you transfer me to the cancellations or retention team?
Retention: How can I help?
You: I've been with you [X] years. I'm paying [CURRENT] for [PLAN]. New customers get the same plan for [NEW-CUSTOMER PRICE], and [COMPETITOR] is offering me [PLAN] for [PRICE] at my address. I'd rather stay, but I can't keep paying [CURRENT]. What can you do?
(Stop talking. Let them go first.)
Them: I can take [X] off.
You: Thanks. That's still [NEW TOTAL] all-in. I'm looking for something close to [TARGET]. Is there a promotion or a loyalty rate for my account?
Them: [Better offer] or "That's the best I can do."
You: OK. If that's the best, I'll go ahead and switch. Can you tell me the cancellation process and any fees? (This is where the real best offer often appears. If it doesn't, you either switch or accept your walk-away price, which you set in advance.)
Put a calendar reminder for 11 months from today: "Call [PROVIDER], run template 04 again."
Use when: your provider has live chat (most internet, mobile, energy and software companies do). Chat is slower but you get a written transcript, which is gold if they "forget" the deal later.
Tip: open the chat from the "cancel service" or "leave us" page if there is one. You're more likely to reach someone with retention offers.
Hi, I'm [NAME], account [ACCOUNT NUMBER], account holder. I'm reviewing my bills and I'm planning to cancel [SERVICE] this week. I'm paying [CURRENT PRICE]/month for [PLAN]. New customers get the same plan for [NEW-CUSTOMER PRICE], and [COMPETITOR] offers [PLAN] for [PRICE] at my address. Before I switch: what's the best price you can offer to keep me? I'd like to stay month-to-month without a new contract.
Thanks for that. With taxes and fees it's still [TOTAL]. My target is around [TARGET]. Are there any other promotions or loyalty discounts available for my account? If not, I'll go ahead with [COMPETITOR].
I'd prefer to handle it here so I have a written record. If chat can't change the price, can you tell me what offers are available on my account, and I'll decide?
Great, I accept. Please confirm in this chat: (1) the new monthly price including taxes and fees, (2) the start date and how long it lasts, (3) the price after it ends, (4) that there's no new contract or early termination fee. Thank you.
Then download or email yourself the transcript before you close the window (most chats have a "download transcript" or "email transcript" button; otherwise screenshot it).
Use when: the Money Leak Finder flags "Price up X%" on a subscription or software plan (not phone/internet/insurance, which have their own templates).
Three moves, in order:
Subject: Price increase on my account · [ACCOUNT]
Hello,
My [SERVICE / PLAN] went from [OLD PRICE] to [NEW PRICE] on [DATE]. I've been a customer since [YEAR] and I'd like to stay, but the new price doesn't fit my budget.
Could you keep me at [OLD PRICE] (or offer a loyalty / annual discount)? If not, I'll move to [LOWER TIER] or cancel at the end of this billing period.
Thank you, [NAME]
The pattern: many insurers raise premiums at renewal and rely on you not checking. The fix is a yearly 45-minute re-quote. This isn't advice on what cover you need. It's a process to make sure you're not overpaying for the cover you already chose.
Get at least 3 quotes with exactly the same cover, limits and deductibles as your current policy. Write them here:
| Insurer | Premium | Same limits? | Same deductible/excess? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current: [NAME] | [ ] | ✔ | ✔ | renewal price |
| [QUOTE 1] | [ ] | |||
| [QUOTE 2] | [ ] | |||
| [QUOTE 3] | [ ] |

Calendar reminder: [RENEWAL DATE minus 30 days], every year: "Re-quote insurance, template 11."
Use when: you were charged twice for one thing, charged after cancelling, charged the wrong amount, or charged for something you never received.
Step 0 · Ask the merchant first (fastest). Send the short message below. If no fix within ~7 days (or they refuse), go to the bank. Keep everything in writing.
Subject: Duplicate charge · please refund [AMOUNT]
Hello,
On [DATE] my [CARD TYPE] ending in [LAST 4] was charged [AMOUNT] twice for the same [ORDER / SUBSCRIPTION / PURCHASE] (order or account [NUMBER]). Transaction dates: [DATE 1] and [DATE 2].
Please refund the duplicate charge of [AMOUNT] to the original card and reply with the refund reference. If I don't hear back by [DATE + 7 DAYS], I'll ask my card issuer to reverse it.

Most issuers let you dispute in the app: tap the transaction → "Dispute" / "Report a problem". Choose "duplicate charge", "charged after cancellation", or "incorrect amount". Attach screenshots.
For a written billing-error notice under the Fair Credit Billing Act, send a letter to the billing-inquiries address on your statement (not the payment address). The FTC says it must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you. The issuer must acknowledge within 30 days and resolve within 90 days. Send by certified mail, return receipt requested.

Please remove the charge of [AMOUNT], plus any related interest and fees, and send me written confirmation. Copies of [receipts / cancellation confirmation / screenshots] are enclosed.

Debit-card and electronic transfer errors fall under a different law (the Electronic Fund Transfer Act / Regulation E). Report the error to your bank as soon as you notice: the key deadline is generally 60 days after the statement showing the error was sent. Use the bank's app or call, then follow up in writing with the same letter above (change "card issuer" to "bank").
Never give anyone your online-banking password or one-time codes. Your bank will never need them to process a dispute.
Use when: you paid for months (or a year) of something you never opened: an app, a gym, a software seat, a streaming plan, a "premium" tier. Companies are not always obliged to refund this. Many do anyway when you ask politely, show low usage and keep it short. That's the bet.
Your odds go up when: you can say you never logged in, the charge was recent, it was an auto-renewal, or you're a long-time customer.
Subject: Refund request · unused [SERVICE] charges · [ACCOUNT]
Hello,
I've just noticed I've been charged [AMOUNT] per month for [SERVICE] since [DATE], on account [ACCOUNT]. I haven't used the service in that time ([you can check: no logins / no bookings / no downloads since DATE]).
I've cancelled the subscription today. As a goodwill gesture, could you refund the last [NUMBER] charges ([TOTAL AMOUNT]) to my card ending in [LAST 4]?
I'd appreciate a reply with the refund reference.

Subject: Refund request · annual renewal on [DATE] · [ACCOUNT]
Hello,
My [SERVICE] plan auto-renewed on [DATE] for [AMOUNT]. I didn't intend to renew, I haven't used the service since the renewal, and I've now cancelled.
Could you please refund the renewal (or a pro-rated amount for the unused months) to my card ending in [LAST 4]?
[US, IF RELEVANT: I don't recall receiving a renewal reminder before the charge.] [UK/EU, IF WITHIN 14 DAYS: I signed up online and I'm within the 14-day cancellation period, so I'm also exercising my right to cancel.]
Thank you, [NAME]
Thanks for your reply. I understand it's outside your standard policy. I've been a customer since [YEAR] and the service went completely unused. Would you consider a partial refund or account credit of [AMOUNT]? If not, I'd appreciate it if you could pass this to a supervisor.
Use when: a "free trial" silently turned into a paid subscription, and you only noticed it on your statement.
Do these in order:
Subject: Refund request · free trial converted on [DATE] · [ACCOUNT]
Hello,
I signed up for a free trial of [SERVICE] on [DATE]. It converted into a paid plan on [DATE] and I was charged [AMOUNT] [and again on DATE]. I didn't intend to continue, and I haven't used the service since the trial ended.
I've cancelled today. Please refund [AMOUNT / TOTAL] to my card ending in [LAST 4] and confirm by email.
[US, CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: since July 1, 2025, California's Automatic Renewal Law also covers free-to-paid conversions and requires clear disclosure and easy cancellation.] [UK/EU: I'm within 14 days of the first paid charge / of signing up, and I'm exercising my right to cancel.]
Thank you, [NAME]
Use when: your statement shows fees. One call or message often gets a recent fee refunded, especially if it's your first in a while. Then fix the cause so it doesn't come back.
You: Hi, I'm looking at my account ending [LAST 4] and I see a [FEE TYPE] of [AMOUNT] on [DATE]. I've been a customer since [YEAR] and [this was a one-off / I didn't realize the balance dropped / I moved money as soon as I saw it]. Could you waive it as a courtesy?
If yes: Thank you. Can you confirm when it'll show on my account? And is there anything I can change so it doesn't happen again?
If no: I understand. Is there a supervisor who can review it? I'd like to stay with [BANK], but these fees are making me look at other accounts.
Hello, on [DATE] I was charged a [FEE TYPE] of [AMOUNT] on my account ending [LAST 4]. I've been a customer since [YEAR] with a good history. Could you please refund this fee as a one-time courtesy? I've already [added funds / set up a low-balance alert / switched to paperless]. Thank you, [NAME].
| Fee | Typical fix (check your bank's terms) |
|---|---|
| Monthly maintenance | Ask: "What do I need to do to get this fee waived every month?" (often a minimum balance, a direct deposit, or a student/senior account). Or ask to switch to a no-fee account. If they can't, move to a bank or credit union that doesn't charge one. |
| Overdraft / NSF | Ask to turn off overdraft coverage for debit-card purchases (the card is declined instead of charged a fee), set up a low-balance alert, or link a savings account. |
| ATM fees | Use your bank's ATM locator / its network. Get cash back at a store. Some accounts refund other banks' ATM fees: ask. |
| Foreign transaction fees | Ask for a refund of recent ones, then use a card with no foreign transaction fee when you travel or buy from foreign sites. When a terminal or ATM abroad asks "pay in your home currency?", choose the local currency: the "home currency" option (dynamic currency conversion) usually adds a markup. |
| Credit card late fee | Call right after paying: first-time late fees are often refunded on request. Set up autopay for at least the minimum. |
| Credit card interest | If you usually pay in full, ask: "Can you refund this month's interest as a one-time courtesy?" |
| Italy · "canone conto" / "imposta di bollo" | The account fee ("canone") is often avoidable with an online/zero-fee account. The imposta di bollo (€34.20/year on current accounts with average balance above €5,000) is a tax, not a bank fee; the bank can't waive it. |
| UK · "non-sterling transaction fee" | Many UK cards charge around 3% abroad; several app-based banks and travel cards don't. Compare before you travel. |
The Italian imposta di bollo amount and threshold: check your bank's statement or the Agenzia delle Entrate. Rules can change.
Use when: you bought something and the same item from the same seller dropped in price shortly after. Many retailers have a price-adjustment policy (often 7 to 30 days, sometimes excluding sales events or third-party sellers). It's a store policy, not a law: check the seller's policy page first ("[STORE] price adjustment policy").
Odds boosters: same seller, same item/SKU, within the window, item not yet returned, you're polite and quick.
Subject: Price adjustment request · order [ORDER NUMBER]
Hello,
I bought [ITEM, model/SKU] on [DATE] for [PRICE PAID], order [ORDER NUMBER]. The same item is now listed on your site at [NEW PRICE] (screenshot attached, taken [DATE/TIME], link: [URL]).
Under your price adjustment policy, could you please refund the difference of [AMOUNT] to my original payment method?
Thank you, [NAME]
"I see the price dropped to [NEW PRICE]. I'm still within the return window. Rather than returning it and buying it again, could you refund the difference of [AMOUNT]? It saves us both the shipping." Only say this if you'd actually return it. If they say no, decide whether the return is worth it (watch for restocking fees or return shipping costs).
For any purchase over [YOUR THRESHOLD, e.g. $100], set a reminder at day 7 and day 13 after purchase: "Check price of [ITEM]. Template 17."
Use when: you've asked in writing, waited a reasonable time (usually 14–30 days or the company's stated deadline), and got a "no" or silence. Escalations are free, and companies often resolve the issue once a regulator or ombudsman is involved.
Subject: Final request before escalation · [ACCOUNT / CASE NUMBER]
Hello,

Please [SPECIFIC REMEDY, e.g. "refund $X to my card ending 1234"] within 14 days. If the issue isn't resolved by [DATE], I will submit a complaint to [REGULATOR / OMBUDSMAN] and dispute the charge with my card issuer.

Keep it factual, dated, and short. One page of facts beats five pages of frustration.
Use when: you receive any hospital, ER, surgery, lab or ambulance bill you don't fully understand, or that's bigger than expected. Do not pay a large bill based on a summary. A summary ("Cardiology: $70,000") can't be checked. An itemized bill with codes can.
What you're asking for:
Real example (reported by Tom's Hardware, October 2025): a family billed about $195,000 for four hours of ICU care after a relative's death requested the itemized bill, used Claude to review the codes, found duplicate and miscoded charges, and settled for about $33,000. One story, not a promise, but it shows why step 1 matters.

Re: Request for itemized statement · account [ACCOUNT NUMBER]
Hello,
I received a bill for [AMOUNT] for the dates of service above. Before paying, I need to review the charges. Please send me:
- A complete itemized statement listing each charge with the date of service, description, CPT/HCPCS code, revenue code, number of units, and amount;
- A copy of the claim form (UB-04 or CMS-1500) submitted to any insurer, if applicable;
- Records of any payments, adjustments and discounts applied to the account;
- Your financial assistance (charity care) policy and application.
Please place the account on hold and do not send it to collections while I review the itemized bill. I am not refusing to pay; I am asking to verify the charges.
Thank you, [NAME]
Next: template 13 to review and dispute errors.
Use after template 12, once you have the itemized bill (and the EOB if insured).
Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT together with the itemized bill text (remove your Social Security number, insurance member ID and address first):
You are a careful US medical billing reviewer. Below is an itemized hospital/provider bill [and my insurer's Explanation of Benefits]. Review it line by line and produce a table: line, date, code, description, charge, and an "issue" column.
Flag:
1. Exact or near duplicates (same code, same date, same units), including services billed both as a bundled/"master" charge and as separate lines.
2. Unbundling: components billed separately that are normally included in one procedure or room/facility charge.
3. Wrong place of service or status (e.g., inpatient vs. observation vs. emergency) and whether the level billed matches the visit described.
4. Charges for dates that don't match my stay (e.g., billed for the day of discharge or before admission), or quantities that look impossible (e.g., 24 hours of a service in a 4-hour visit).
5. Services I may not have received (I will confirm): list them as questions.
6. Charges that differ from the EOB "allowed amount" or that the EOB marks as "patient not responsible".
7. Supplies and medications that look like they should be included in the room or procedure charge.
Do not invent rules. When you're unsure, say "verify with the provider". Then draft a polite, firm letter to the billing department listing each disputed line with a one-sentence reason and asking for a corrected bill. Keep it under one page.
Facts: patient [NAME], dates [DATES], what actually happened: [ONE-PARAGRAPH TIMELINE: arrival time, what was done, discharge or death time].

Hello,
I have reviewed the itemized statement dated [DATE] and believe it contains the following errors:
Line Date Code Charge Issue [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [e.g., duplicate of line X: same code, same date] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [e.g., billed as inpatient; patient was seen in the ER for 4 hours and never admitted] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [e.g., ventilator charge on a date before it was used] Please review these items, correct the account, and send me a revised itemized statement. [IF INSURED: Please also resubmit the corrected claim to my insurer, [INSURER], member ID available on request.]
Please keep the account on hold from collections while this review is pending. I am happy to pay the correct amount.
[IF UNINSURED: I also request a self-pay discount and an application for financial assistance under your financial assistance policy.]

This is a template, not legal or medical advice. For very large bills, a patient advocate or medical-billing advocate can help; some work for a percentage of savings, so ask about fees first.
Use when: your flight arrived 3+ hours late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, or you were denied boarding, and the flight was covered (see below). Claim directly with the airline: it's free. Claim companies take a cut.
EU Regulation 261/2004 generally covers:
The UK kept an equivalent law after Brexit ("UK261") for flights from UK airports and flights into the UK on UK or EU airlines.
Compensation amounts (per passenger):
| Distance | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500–3,500 km (and intra-EU flights over 1,500 km) | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 | £520 (£260 if 3–4 hours late) |

Subject: Compensation claim under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 · flight [FLIGHT NUMBER] on [DATE] · booking [PNR]
Dear [AIRLINE],
I was a passenger on flight [FLIGHT NUMBER] from [DEPARTURE AIRPORT] to [ARRIVAL AIRPORT] on [DATE], booking reference [PNR]. [The flight arrived at [TIME], [X] hours and [Y] minutes after the scheduled arrival time of [TIME]. / The flight was cancelled on [DATE], [X] days before departure. / I was denied boarding against my will.]
The flight distance is approximately [KM] km. Under Article 7 of Regulation (EC) 261/2004 [UK: the retained UK version of that Regulation], I am entitled to compensation of [€250/€400/€600 or £220/£350/£520] per passenger for the following passengers: [NAMES].
I also request reimbursement of the following expenses incurred while waiting, which the airline did not provide: [MEALS / HOTEL / TRANSPORT], total [AMOUNT], receipts attached.
Please pay [TOTAL] to: [ACCOUNT HOLDER NAME] · [IBAN / SORT CODE + ACCOUNT NUMBER] · [BIC]

Attach: boarding passes, booking confirmation, receipts, any delay/cancellation messages.
Use a distance calculator for the great-circle distance between the two airports (search "airport distance calculator").
Use when: your flight to/from/within the US was cancelled or significantly changed or delayed, and you did not accept the rebooking or a voucher.
The rule (US DOT, in effect since October 28, 2024): airlines must give you a cash refund (to your original form of payment) when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel or accept alternatives. A significant delay is defined as more than 3 hours for domestic and more than 6 hours for international flights. Refunds are due within 7 business days for card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
What US law does NOT give you: fixed cash compensation for delays like EU261. Some airlines have their own commitments (meals, hotels, rebooking). DOT's Airline Customer Service Dashboard (flightrights.gov) lists what each major airline commits to.
Don't accept a voucher or travel credit if you want cash. Accepting alternative transport or a voucher can end your right to the refund.
Subject: Refund request · [FLIGHT NUMBER] on [DATE] · confirmation [CODE]
Hello,
My flight [FLIGHT NUMBER] from [ORIGIN] to [DESTINATION] on [DATE] (confirmation [CODE]) was [cancelled / delayed by X hours / changed from TIME to TIME]. I did not accept the rebooking or any voucher and did not travel on this itinerary.
Under the US Department of Transportation refund rule, I request a full refund of [TICKET AMOUNT + SEAT/BAG FEES PAID] to my original form of payment.
[IF A BAG WAS SIGNIFICANTLY DELAYED: I also request a refund of the checked bag fee of [AMOUNT]; my bag was delivered on [DATE/TIME].]
Please confirm the refund and its expected date.
Thank you, [NAME] · [EMAIL] · [PHONE]
Use when: the room wasn't what you booked (wrong room type, broken AC, noise, cleanliness, missing amenities), you were "walked" (overbooked and moved), or you were charged unexpected fees.
Reality: there's no EU261-style law for hotels. What works is: complain on the spot, give them a chance to fix it, keep evidence, then ask for a specific remedy. Platform rules (Booking.com, Expedia, Airbnb, Vrbo) and your credit card are your backup.
Subject: Request for partial refund · reservation [NUMBER] · [DATES]
Hello,
I stayed at [HOTEL / LISTING] from [CHECK-IN] to [CHECK-OUT], reservation [NUMBER], booked as [ROOM TYPE / LISTING DESCRIPTION] for [TOTAL PRICE].
During the stay: [ISSUE, e.g. "the air conditioning didn't work on the nights of X and Y; I reported it at the front desk at 10:30 pm on X (staff member: NAME) and it was not repaired"]. Photos are attached.
Because I didn't receive what I paid for, I'm requesting a refund of [AMOUNT, e.g. "the cost of the two affected nights, $XXX" or "XX% of the stay"] to my original payment method.
I'd appreciate a reply within 7 days.
Kind regards, [NAME] · [EMAIL]
"The [FEE] of [AMOUNT] was not shown in the total price I agreed to at booking (screenshot attached). Please refund it." US: the FTC's rule on unfair or deceptive fees (in effect since May 12, 2025) requires short-term lodging and live-event ticket sellers to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front. Mention it if the fee was hidden.

State programs, central banks and official funds hold money from forgotten accounts, uncashed checks, deposits, refunds and pensions, waiting for the owner to ask. Searching is free on official sites. Five minutes, once a year. Search your name, your old addresses, and family members' names if you're handling an estate.
Scam warning: official searches are free. Ignore anyone who asks for a fee upfront, your bank login, or your one-time codes to "recover" your money.
Search "[your country] unclaimed money official" or "[country] dormant accounts central bank". Use only government or central-bank sites. In some countries (Germany, for example) we couldn't find a single official national search; there, ask the banks you've used directly.

On your statement: the same merchant, the same amount, every month. SPOTIFY USA 877-7781161 NY -11.99.
Why it survives: it's small, it's automatic, and you stopped noticing it after the second month.
Fix: cancel (template 01), or keep it on purpose. The goal isn't to cancel everything. It's to pay only for what you'd sign up for again today.
On your statement: a subscription that starts in the middle of your data. AUDIBLE*2K4LM0RT1 AMZN.COM/BILL -14.95 first appears in late July and repeats.
Why it survives: the trial ended while you were busy. Many trials ask for a card up front for exactly this reason.
Fix: cancel and ask for a refund of the charges you didn't use (template 08). Recent conversions with zero usage often get refunded just for asking.
On your statement: same merchant, the amount steps up. NETFLIX.COM -15.49, -15.49, -17.99, -17.99.
Why it survives: you were told by email, maybe, in paragraph four.
Fix: for subscriptions, push back or downgrade (template 18). For phone, internet and TV, negotiate (templates 04, 05). For insurance, re-quote (template 11).
On your statement: same merchant, same amount, within a few days. DOORDASH DASHPASS -9.99 on Aug 10 and Aug 11.
Why it survives: nobody checks every line.
Fix: ask the merchant, then dispute with your card if needed (template 06). In the US, a credit-card billing-error dispute must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing the error was sent, so don't wait.
On your statement: MONTHLY MAINTENANCE FEE -12.00, NON-NETWORK ATM FEE -3.50, FOREIGN TRANSACTION FEE -2.85, OVERDRAFT FEE -35.00, INTEREST CHARGE. In Italy: canone, commissioni, spese. In the UK: non-sterling transaction fee.
Why it survives: fees feel like the weather, not like a choice.
Fix: ask for a courtesy waiver, then remove the cause: a no-fee account, overdraft opt-out, in-network ATMs, a card without foreign transaction fees (template 09). When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you "in your home currency", choose the local currency; the home-currency option usually costs more.
On your statement: four streaming services, two cloud storage plans, three AI chatbots, two delivery memberships. Why it survives: each one made sense the day you signed up. Fix: keep one per category and rotate: one streaming service per month, binge, cancel, switch. You lose nothing but the overlap.
On your statement: phone, internet, insurance. Big, "fixed", and quietly growing. COMCAST XFINITY -79.99 … -89.99.
Why it survives: you assume the price is the price.
Fix: a 20-minute call to the retention team with a competitor's offer (template 04) or a yearly re-quote (template 11). Not guaranteed, but it's often the highest money-per-minute item on your list.
Subscriptions are the easy wins. These three are where the large numbers usually are.
The person who answers the main line usually can't change your price. The retention / cancellations team often can. Template 04 gets you there and gives you a prep table: current price, new-customer price, a competitor's real offer at your address, your target and your walk-away price.
What usually moves the number: a competitor quote, dropping a speed tier you don't use, removing equipment rental, removing add-ons, autopay/paperless discounts, outage credits. Get the new price in writing, including taxes and fees, and note when it ends.
Country notes:
Insurance doesn't negotiate like a phone bill. It re-quotes. Template 11 is a checklist: same cover, same limits, same deductible, three quotes, then call your current insurer with the best one. Switch only when the new policy starts before the old one ends.
If you get a large hospital bill, don't pay from the summary. The sequence:
If you were uninsured or self-pay and got a Good Faith Estimate, and the bill is at least $400 more than the estimate, you can start the federal patient-provider dispute process within 120 calendar days of the bill ($25 fee). Details at cms.gov/nosurprises.
This is the playbook the family in the Tom's Hardware story followed: itemized bill, line-by-line review, a firm letter citing what was wrong. From about $195,000 to about $33,000.
If your flight arrived 3+ hours late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, or you were denied boarding, you may be owed fixed compensation unless the cause was "extraordinary" (severe weather, air traffic control, security):
| Distance | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 | £520 (£260 if 3–4 h late) |
It covers flights departing the EU (any airline) and flights arriving in the EU on an EU airline; the UK version covers UK departures and UK arrivals on UK/EU airlines. Claim directly with the airline using template 14. It's free, and claim companies take a cut. In June 2026 EU lawmakers reached a political agreement on reforming these rules that, according to reports, keeps the 3-hour threshold and the amounts; until it's formally in force, the current rules apply. Check europa.eu (Your Europe → Air passenger rights) before you claim.
Since October 28, 2024, US airlines must give a cash refund if your flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you don't accept alternatives. A significant delay is more than 3 hours domestic or 6 hours international. Refunds are due within 7 business days for card purchases. Don't accept a voucher if you want cash. There's no US law giving fixed cash compensation for delays. Template 15.
No compensation law, but a strong process: complain on the spot, photos, a written request for a specific refund, then the booking platform or your card. Since May 12, 2025, the FTC's fee rule requires US hotels and short-term rentals to show the total price including mandatory fees up front, which helps if a "resort fee" appeared at checkout. Template 16.
